When Familiar Warning Signs Are Overlooked - and the Cost of Waiting.

Reporter:
“Dr. Andrea, many parents say they noticed unusual signs in their children but did not think they were serious. Could you elaborate on this?”
Dr. Andrea Martha Bagain:
“In reality, most of the cases I encounter begin in exactly this way.
The early signs of speech delay, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or autism spectrum disorder often appear very early, yet they are so common in everyday life that they are easily overlooked.
Between the ages of one and two, a child may:
– Babble less or speak very few single words
– Fail to respond when their name is called
– Show limited eye contact

Many parents reassure themselves by saying, ‘Boys tend to talk later.’
And so… they wait a little longer.”
Reporter:
“But if parents choose to wait, what usually happens next?”
Dr. Andrea Martha Bagain:
“Between the ages of two and four, many children begin to show clearer signs:
– Excessive hyperactivity and an inability to sit still
– Poor attention, quickly forgetting what they have just learned
– Hearing instructions but failing to follow them

At this stage, the child may already fall within the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder category, yet families often think:
‘My child is just smart and energetic.’
‘Things will change once they start school.’

What is concerning is that the problem does not stop there.”
(Children with hyperactivity may fail to recognize dangerous situations, such as running across the street, climbing to high places, or handling sharp objects without any sense of fear).

“What about autism spectrum disorder, then?”
Dr. Andrea Martha Bagain:
“From the ages of three to five and beyond, the signs of autism spectrum disorder become more apparent:
– Limited responsiveness and a lack of initiative in communication
– Little to no interest in playing with other children
– Repetitive behaviors and the use of meaningless or repetitive speech

At this point, many parents begin to feel concerned, yet they still hold on to hope:
‘Maybe my child is just shy.’
‘Let’s wait a little longer and see.’

And it is precisely this waiting that troubles me the most.”

“At what point do parents truly begin to ‘wake- up’?”
Dr. Andrea Martha Bagain:
“This typically occurs when a child enters a formal learning environment.
At that point, problems can no longer be concealed.
It is not that improvement is impossible - but it becomes far more difficult once time has been lost.
Many parents tell me:
‘Doctor, these signs were already present years ago…’

And that is when they begin to realize the cost of waiting.
This cost does not appear overnight.
It accumulates with each passing year.

Prolonged speech delay affects learning ability and social communication.
Untreated hyperactivity increases the risk of developing oppositional behaviors.
Late intervention in autism spectrum disorder requires more years and significantly greater resources to achieve improvement.

I always tell parents:
- Children with speech delay struggle to express their thoughts, leading to irritability and defiant behavior.
- Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder fail to keep up with lessons and are repeatedly reprimanded.
- Children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty integrating and are gradually isolated from their peers.

“In children with speech delay, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or autism spectrum disorder, outward symptoms are outcomes rather than root causes.

From a developmental perspective, the core issue lies in the brain - the center that governs how information is received, processed, and responded to.
When brain development is delayed or out of sync, children may want to speak but cannot, want to focus but are unable to sustain attention, or want to interact but struggle to process social cues in time.
(Children with autism spectrum disorder exhibit an abnormally excessive number of neural synapses - the ‘connection points’ between brain nerve cells - compared to typically developing children).
As a result, focusing solely on external training often leads to a familiar reality:
children undergo extensive practice yet make slow progress; the more pressure parents apply, the more stressed the child becomes.

For this group of children, effective intervention cannot stop at behavioral training alone.
It requires a sufficiently robust approach that supports and ‘activates’ the foundations of brain development - particularly in areas related to language, cognition, and behavioral control.
